Chicago Area LECET is offering scholarships worth up to $2,500 per year to eligible individuals who meet the following criteria (among other criteria):
- Dependent of a Chicago Laborers' District Council member (a union Laborer) that has been permanently disabled or killed as a result of an on-the-job injury or illness.
- Dependent of a signatory contractor employee that does not belong to any other unions that has been permanently disabled or killed as a result of an on-the-job injury or illness.

Of course everybody's goal first and foremost is to prevent these types of tragic injuries, but unfortunately a construction site can be a dangerous place, and injuries and deaths do happen. The goal then becomes to support that person and his or her family.
